‘한 사람을 죽여 온 민족이 살게하라!’
본문관찰과 묵상
예수가 죽은 나사로를 부활시킨 사건으로 대제사장과 바리새인들이 공회를 열고 예수를 어떻게 할까 논의했다. 그해의 대제사장 가야바가 한 사람이 죽어 온 민족을 살리는 것은 유대인들에게 유익한 것이라고 말했다.

그때부터 유대인들은 예수를 죽이려 모의했다. 예수는 유대인 가운데 드러내지 않으려고 에브라임 동네에 제자들과 함께 은둔했다. 유월절에 유대인들이 자신들을 성결케 하려고 예루살렘으로 가서 예수가 왔는지? 대제사장에게 신고하려고 찾기 시작했다. 가야바는 예수를 죽여서 유대민족을 살리자고 했다. 그러나 하나님은 예수를 죽이심으로 온 인류를 구원하시려 했다.
결단과 적용
악인들이 죽이려 꾸미는 사악한 계획도 하나님은 죄인들을 살리기 위한 구원의 계획으로 바꾸신다. ‘여호와께서 온갖 것을 그 씌움에 적당하게 지으셨나니 악인도 악한 날에 적당하게 하셨느니라’(잠 16:4). 예수를 죽여 유대인들을 살리고자 한 가야바의 계획은 예수 한 사람이 죽어 모든 죄인을 살리시는 하나님의 구원으로 가야바도 악한 날에 적당하게 쓰셨다. ‘우리가 알거니와 하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그 뜻대로 부르심을 받은자들에게는 모든 일이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라’(롬 8:28).

Observation and meditation on the text
The high priests and the Pharisees called for Sanhedrin to discuss what and how to do with Jesus who raised the dead Lazarus. Caiaphas the high priest that year suggested that it was better for one man to die for all Jews than the whole nation would perish.
I hear the voice of the Lord through QT
From that time on, Jews plotted to kill Jesus. Jesus hid himself with his disciples in Ephraim near wilderness, and no longer moved about publically. Jews went up to Jerusalem to keep Passover to purify themselves, and they tried to find Jesus to report to the religious leaders. Caiaphas the high priest that year advised Jews to kill Jesus for all Jews. However, God changed Jews’ plan to save all people by letting Jesus to be crucified.
Decisions and applications
God can change the wicked plan to kill the righteous to a plan to save sinners. ‘The Lord works out everything to its proper end-even the wicked for a day of disaster’ (Pr 16:4). Caiaphas was used by God on a day of disaster by advising Jews to kill Jesus to save all Jews, which turned out to God’s plan for salvation by one man Jesus’ crucifixion. ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose’ (Rom 8:28).
